With Memorial Day just around the corner, I thought it would be the perfect time to switch things up at The Little Glass House…a summer refresh, if you will! Summer is all about the outdoors and bringing it inside. I wanted to declutter and open things up a bit.
A trip to the Barnhouse Market pop up shops in Santa Barbara was the jumping off point. A few new pieces started the summer refresh ball rolling! I found a gorgeous blue chest/trunk that I stored a lot of my books in. This made for a cleaner looking bedroom. A few touches of blue and some peonies equal instant summer.
A new elm bench from Debra Hall’s gorgeous pop up was the perfect size at the foot of the bed and it’s light color just says summer!
Our diminutive entry hall got a mini makeover as well. A small chippy gray bench is the perfect spot to put a purse or bags, and bonus, shoes fit neatly underneath!
The kitchen got some added organization with a small crate to corral napkins, salt and pepper shakers, and utensils (another Barnhouse Market find).
The living/dining/kitchen area are all one open space and I haven’t made any major changes in years. I started by moving the large plants around and putting them in different containers. The two chairs (which I LOVE, by the way) have been in front of the fireplace forever. But there is no reason to sit facing the fireplace in a Cali summer!
I swapped the leather sling chair that was in the living room out with one of the chairs in the above photo. The other one went into the office. There is so much breathing space now, which just feels right for summer!
With the French doors open, summer comes inside. It doesn’t mean it will stay this way, but change is fun and I’m embracing all the new open space.
Those of you who have followed my blog or Instagram may be wondering what happened to the elephant table. Never fear, I found a spot for him too!
The dining table wasn’t left out. I found a beautiful dough bowl from Debra Hall at the pop up shop. I gave the large concrete bowl that was there before a rest and put the sea glass in the new wooden bowl.
Previously, the living room had the sling chair and a very overgrown plant, which now both reside next to the fireplace. To make room for the much larger chair, I moved the sofa down and shuffled the side table and stool elsewhere. The little table that used to be where the elephant is now, is perfect next to the chair. Even with the larger chair, the space feels bigger and brighter!
Whew! After all of my endeavors, I’m currently savoring a glass of wine and contemplating the work that needs to be done outside, like power washing the teak furniture! But in the words of Scarlett O’Hara, “I can’t think about this now. I’ll go crazy if I do! I’ll think about it tomorrow…”
Oh, it’s just lovely! Fresh. Open. Ready for the simple days of Summer. I’m inspired to “summer spruce” a few places in my home as well. It always feels so inspiring to shuffle furniture and find new places to put things.
We have a new deck going in out by the pool and I’m so happy to be bringing the outside in and the inside out with this new space! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
Thank you, Kellen. I’m sorry it took so long to get back to you. I’ve been in the middle of a weekend of wedding events! 🙂 Good luck with your new deck. We love ours! Makes everything look better. 🙂 Have a wonderful week!
Best, Elizabeth
Love all of it! What about the kitchen rug in front of the sink? What is the story behind it?
