In March of 2020, our lives changed virtually overnight. The shock of it has sunk in and the new “normal” for the moment involves long lines at grocery stores, working from home, wearing masks, and apparently a toilet paper shortage. I’ve been extremely fortunate on the TP front, as I always stock between 20-30 rolls…it’s something I never want to run out of…especially in Big Sur where the closest market is 45 minutes away and there are constant road closures.
I made the decision to quarantine at The Big Sur House. I can’t even articulate the whys, it was simply a strong pull to be here. Big Sur is where I evacuated to for two weeks (although we didn’t have the house yet) during the massive Thomas Fire in December of 2017. It just felt right to be here again.
Honestly, even before the virus, when I was staying at The Big Sur House I would go days without seeing another human being. That has not changed. With the nearest food store so far away, I would normally go once a week. Now I go every 10 days armed with hand sanitizer and a bandana/mask. The parks, hotels, and restaurants are all closed, although a few places do limited take out a couple days a week for the community.
Like everyone else, I read, watch some TV (although Netflix never seems to work), clean a lot, and eat way too much! Thank goodness our steep road affords me some exercise. I also try and do a Body Pump routine twice a week. Some gyms were kind enough to post work outs on YouTube. I have to do something to work off those brownies I can’t seem to stop baking!
Here at The Big Sur House, there are projects galore…seriously I think there is enough to keep me busy until I’m very old and gray. My most recent one was taking apart a small retaining wall (really just a pile of rocks) and rebuilding it to make a proper planting bed. Heady stuff here! I will share when it’s done. π
I have also found that I’m spending more time taking pictures. It has been incredibly therapeutic to focus on the beauty around me instead of the news 24/7. I’ve put together some of my favorites from the month of March. I hope you enjoy…
So beautiful! Great photography of one of my top five places to visit.
Thanks so much, Carol! Have a beautiful day.
Beautiful pictures! And lucky you to be isolating in Big Sur. Hiking, gorgeous vistas and many projects to keep you busy. I, too, would be taking lots of pictures in that majestic location. Stay safe and well.
Thank you, Pam. Not too much hiking unless you count our steep road! Parks are all closed and Iβm not a rule breaker π Just being here at home is more than enough. π
Thank you, Pam. Not too much hiking (except our road) since all the parks and trails are closed, but blessed to be here and definitely many projects to keep me busy!
Be well,
Elizabeth
Your photos are beautiful! And I can understand that it helps to be in such a beautiful spot.
Thank you! It definitely has been a blessing to be surrounded by this beauty when there is so much we donβt have control over at the moment.
sooo gorgeous.
Thank you! Such an inspiring place π
What a gorgeous place to spend the past few weeks in…even while taking care of some projects! The views are just magnificent!! Thank you for sharing such beauty with us.
Hi Reba,
Iβm so glad you enjoy my photos of Big Sur. I will be sharing more in the upcoming weeks! Be well π
Please keep sharing pics of this beautiful place! Keeps me calm in this crazy time.
Iβm so glad you enjoy my photos. I will be posting another series from the Month of April at the end of next week. Be well!
These photos are so gorgeous and therapeutic just to stare at! How happy to have such beauty around you. I always look forward to your posts on IG. I love all your homes, but the Big Sur house has the most amazing views, of course. As for the interiors, I love how you’ve given each home its own specific personality. You truly have a wonderful eye for design. Of all the interior accounts I follow, you’re in my top 5. Possibly top 3. Looking forward to your next series of Big Sur photos here on the blog!
Hi Melanie,
Thank you for your kind comments. Both homes are very different for sure but both are me if that makes sense. I love the light and beachy vibe of Santa Barbara but the Big Sur house has the views and projects inside and out that will keep me busy until Iβm old and gray…and I like that.
Iβm so glad you enjoyed the photos. Design and photography go hand in hand. I was an art major and tend to see things as compositions π The photography has been therapy during this crazy time. I will be sharing the best of April photos soon.
All the best,
Elizabeth
