Recently I was asked by a friend to help her furnish a beach/guest house that her college age daughter and a roommate will be living in. Eventually it will transition to a guest house for overflow family and friends. She has done a magnificent job taking an older quirky home and making it into a bright fresh inviting space that any guest would be thrilled to stay at!
The upstairs is its own separate apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, and a lounge room. My friend wanted lots of white and a beachy feeling without the requisite seashells and anchors. There is a bit of a time factor involved so ordering things that are in stock are a must. While some of these items are not the exact ones we will be using, this is the coastal vibe we are striving for.
The center piece of the room will be the bed and the Zoe four-poster from RH TEEN is a show stopper! I often find wonderful items for any age at RH TEEN or even RH BABY & CHILD, so don’t let those words keep you from checking out the younger line. The lighting and some of the furniture is sometimes less expensive. I would add the textural white pick stitch quilt from Pottery Barn and some gorgeous colorful pillows from The Woven Home. A soft linen throw from Brahms Mount will make this a bed any teen would love to curl up in…
For under foot I’d like to use a natural jute rug. This one from my favorite rug shop, Dash and Albert, fits the bill. The subtle stripes lend it a nautical feel.
On top of this I would love to layer this one of a kind vintage rug to bring in some color. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating, Etsy is an amazing resource for almost anything! This beautiful rug is from The Woven Home.
This chair is young, fun, comfy and so pretty in a sand Belgian linen. It’s the Oberon Swivel chair from RH TEEN. A pretty pillow from The Woven Home will bring a touch of the boho style this young lady loves…
In every space I style, I like to have at least one vintage piece. In lieu of a dresser (there is a large closet) I would love to have this steel vanity/desk. I love it’s clean lines! It’s from Rejuvenation and each is a one of a kind. A capiz mirror, simple white chair, and wooden lamp will complete this little vignette.
A sweet raffia nightstand with a sculptural white lamp (both from Serena and Lily) will further add to the coastal vibe.
The beach house has large windows and an enviable view of the ocean from the bedroom. So as not to block or take away from the view, I would install natural woven shades mounted above the window. I often order online from Smith & Noble. I have been happy with the quality and how easy it is to customize them. I also love that the shades are delivered in a timely manner. For this bedroom, I may go lighter than I normally would because the owner really wants an almost all white look. I chose the Wendy Bellissimo Waterfall shade in Malibu/Natural.
To top it all off, a wood beaded light fixture from RH BABY AND CHILD will be the finishing touch along with art, accessories, and plants to truly make this oasis her own.
None of these are written in stone, but suggestions. This is just one of several mood boards. The same vibe can be found scouring tag sales and stores like Target if you have a smaller budget and more time. The goal was to create an almost all white oasis with a beach feeling for a college age girl that could later transition into a guest bedroom. I know I would be happy to be a guest here!
Next week I will share some ideas for the lounge!
I’m loving all the elements you chose for this space, Elizabeth!!! That four poster is a showstopper for sure….
Thank you, Eva! Sadly, the homeowner feels the four poster will draw attention to the low ceilings although I have done it before! But it would be in my dream beach bedroom! 🙂
I’m so sorry to hear that, it’s such a pity but I’m sure you will chose something else, equally beautiful!
