After spending Thanksgiving in Big Sur, I was a little slow getting my Christmas decor on in Santa Barbara. Our plan is to spend Christmas in Big Sur as well, but winter storms are unpredictable and rock slides and closures on Highway 1 are common this time of year. So I’m hedging my bets and decorating a bit in both homes. I’m just not sure which one will get the tree!
I favor an organic approach to Christmas decorating…pinecones, driftwood, and yes some silvery touches too! I change it up a bit each year and this year I decorated our mantle with some pine cones I found in Lake Tahoe.
Last year’s little Pottery Barn tree will have to stand in for the real thing until we figure out where we are going to be! It kind of reminds me of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree.
Over the years, I’ve collected trees of all different shapes and materials and they all live together happily in The Little Glass House. Last I counted, I have 29 Christmas trees sprinkled about!
The living room gets a simple update of white and natural pillows and of course a few tiny trees…
The dining table has a simple linen runner from Sweet Annie and Big Sur pine cones on a giant moose antler.
A staple at Christmas are the collected silver snowflakes that hang from our kitchen light fixture.
At night I light the many candles and votives, put on the Christmas music, and pour some hot wassail. A classic Christmas movie makes for the perfect holiday evening!
Your home has a peaceful beauty to it. Lucky you to even have the possibility of Christmas in Big Sur!
Thank you so much. What a lovely compliment and yes, blessed to have the possibility of Christmas in Big Sur! 🙂
I am so glad you picked up blogging again. I always love to look into your hous(es). The minimal decor is beautiful. I always wonder though how it must feel to celebrate christmas in a warmer climate. You can compare it as you have lived on the eastcoast with snow and cold weather. Does it really feel like christmas now for you in California too?
Hi Petra and thank you! I’m glad to be back. Having lived several years in Florida, I’m used to a mild winter Christmas. And yes, it’s different. I still love to decorate and the nights are quite chilly enough for hot chocolate or wassail. There is of course no snow, but we often didn’t have snow in CT either. I guess you could say I’ve grown accustomed to it. Christmas is in the heart and as long as I have my family and friends around, it feels like Christmas. Santa Barbara is quite magical this time of year with lots of lights and festive shopping! Wishing you a beautiful holiday season.
Ah good to hear Christmas is Christmas, no matter where you live. Thank you and for you and your loved ones a happy season too!
